Newbury to Highgate
The 25 miles of canal path coming out of Newbury was delightful. The early morning mist, hung over the water as the canalboat communities came to life. There really is 'another world' along the British canals. We saw geese, raptors, herons and fish as we headed east. Lily's Will accompanied us for the first ten miles, to show us the way out along the canal.
The cycle track, in places, got very small and difficult at times. At some points it was no more than a narrow slippy gully though rain soaked fields. It was one of these such gullies that caused me to fall off. No damage to me or bike: just got a bit muddy. Sustrans Cycle Route No. 4 is only really suited to off-road bikes between Newbury and Reading.
After Reading we bashed out a few miles on bigger roads until Slough where we picked up Cycle Route 61 which took us into London along some very nice lanes and tracks.
Crossing London, from Ruislip to Highgate was less interesting. Long though. We passed many mosques in the Queensbury region. Some very large and ornate.
At Highgate we located my friends Mike and Sally, with whom we stayed.
No problems so far. Two 80+ mile days. Legs a little tired but nothing unexpected.
Rain is forecast for the next day. We hope not.
