Hey guys
Im here in sunny Sihanoukville, or not so sunny at the moment!!We had about 3 hours of sun and now it is pouring down!So much for being the end of the rainy season, but trying not to let it dampen our spirits for this weekend! It has just started thundering to, just like the last time we came, I think it may be trying to tell us something!! We are staying in a nice guesthouse though called the Monkey Republic, the rooms are cute bungalows and are only 2 mins from the beach. Maybe it might be nicer tomorrow?
Last Saturday we were invited to a wedding, it started off at our house because the land lady is the grooms sister. The house looked beautiful, everthing covered in silk and ribbons and there were hundreds of people. We went down at 6.30 in the morning to join the gift parade, the bride and groom stand in the front with a band leading them and then everybody else follows behind in twos with their gifts. They take up a whole side of the road to walk down, its so bizarre, imagine doing that in England, I dont think so!!! It was amazing to be a part of!We then also got invited to join them for breakfast. We later went to their evening celebrations at a very posh hotel restaurant along the riverfont (they are a very rich family) called the Tonle Sap Restaurant, we got greeted at the door and photos taken with the bride and groom and they give you a small present which was a keyring and a small pouch with 200 riel in it to say thankyou for coming, so sweet. Inside was beautiful, we were sat down with some of the family to eat, and after all the food they give you , you wouldnt need to eat for days!First they bring out some small tapas style dishes as starters, then it was some huge tiger prawns that looked like small lobsters, then a whole other fish, then a lamb stew type thing with rice along with a whole duck. When I say whole duck, I mean, beak and everything, its just put on a plate and not carved or anything, just cut up so you are eating the heart, lungs and good knows what else around the bones! That I found just revoulting and couldnt do!After all this you are given fruit, it just seems to go on forever. After we had eaten we were pulled up to dance, which was good fun, their traditional Khmei dances just involve a lot of footwork and hand twirling, but we must have looked so stupid, no where near as elegant as them!hee hee!
During the day on Saturday, me and Charlotte went and painted my project because it so desperately needed it!We did it orange and white to brighten it up a little bit, some of the girls joined in and it was good fun. We went back on Wednesday night this week to finish it off and then everyone joined in. We put our ipod on and the girls knew quite a lot of the songs because they have Khmei versions, especially Black eyed Peas, my humps, which we put on especially for them!We were there from about 7 until 9.30 and it was such a good evening, the girls were dancing around and helping with the painting. None of them can keep in the lines to save their life but it really didnt matter, they were having fun! They managed to cover each other in it though, they got it everywhere. They really appreciated us doing it and couldnt stop thanking us, it was well worth every moment!!
Tuesday night we took our Australian friend Vaughan to Friends for dinner as he had never been and is leaving next week. It was a really nice night and as usual the food was fantastic!
Thursday we went to watch JCA do their traditional dancing for the German ambassador for Cambodia who was in town. They were amazing, they are so clever and even the four and five year olds were doing it, they also had beautiful costumes on. Definitely another inspiration!
Anyway it has just stopped raining for a little while so i think we are going to try and get back to the guesthouse and pray for better weather tomorrow?!
Hope all is well. Lots of love, Laura xx
