Had a bit of an eventful bus journey to Taupo - it broke down! o dear! were stranded on the side of a road for a few hours which was fun! eventually arrived there after being rescued by another bus company! that evening we went out with some people from the magic bus for a meal and drinks at an Irish bar which was nice - but didnt have a late one as we were getting picked up a 5.40am in the morning for the 'Tongariro Crossing'!!!!!! (hike up a volcano!)
Tongariro Crossing! got up at ridiculous o clock in the morning and were picked up and taken on the coach to the Tongariro National Park which was about an hour and a half drive -got some extra sleep! We set off at 8 ish - had all our supplies - 3 litres of water and lots of food as well as powerade! the first stretch of the walk wasnt too bad, mostly flat and easy, but the weather was really misty and so the views werent as good as they could have been. Second leg was the evil bit! Aptly named the 'devils staircase'! we were climbing up what felt like near vertical rocks for about an hour with sheer drops down a long way on one side! legs starting to hurt already and it was only 9 in the morning!
