We took an overnight bus from Peurto Vallarta to Mexico City, and what a long journey it was. The bus was very nice and comfortable too, but we still had trouble sleeping and were desperate to get off the bus. We arrived in Mexico City early in the morning and took a taxi to our hostel hoping for a couple of hours sleep. However when we arrived at our hostel they told us we couldnt check in till 2pm. Great.... there went our sleep. Instead we headed out like zombies to do the open top tour bus. We figured all we had to do was sit so it woulnt be too tiring. What we hadnt banked on was that we were so tired we would fall asleep anyway. I couldnt have told you half the sites we saw that day on the bus!
Luckily our ticket for the open top bus was valid for 2 days so did not completely go to waste. The next day after a proper nights sleep we took the trip once again. I stayed awake the entire time! It was actually pretty good. Mexico City is an amazing place, lots of great architecture. We got off at the zoo, a free zoo may I add, even better! We took a look around. There was lots there and it even had pandas! We got on and off at several of the bus stops. It was actually a pretty long day by the time we did the whole bus route.
That evening we went on an organised pub crawl by our friend Rodrigo. It took us around various bars and clubs in Mexico City. We had a great time messing around with wrestling masks and salsa dancing. As we wanted to try our hand at salsa dancing Rodrigo took us to a salsa club. There were a lot of locals up dancing and they were really good at it. We had people asking us to dance all night! It was good fun although our salsa could definitely do with a bit of improvement.
Next morning disaster struck. My handbag was stolen. Not just the bag but my camera, ipod, phone, purse, money, bank card and all the photos Ive taken since Fiji on my memory card! I was pretty angry to say the least. All the stuff iv been so carefully looking after the last 10 months snatched away so quickly. The annoying thing is I actually thought to myself as I put my bag down if it was safe.... and decided it was but moved it a lottle closer anyway. I was wrong. There was an older couple sitting next to us. I guess it was them. No one saw it being taken! I never felt a thing. I dont understand. I guess they know exactly what they are doing. Anyway I cancelled my card and made a call to insurance. Hopefully it will be covered. I went to the police and made a report not that I ever expect to see my stuff again. Its a huge hassle but at the end of the day it could have been worse. At least I still have my passport and a back up bank card! I kept them separate, phew!
We made the most of the time we had left in Mexico City. We took a trip to see the pyramids in Teotihuacan. They were pretty impressive and very big. One of them is the 3rd largest pyramid in the world! It was quite a hike to the top.
We went to some of the local attractions too, the Catedral Metropolitana, the Palacio National and Centro Hostorico and Centro Cultural De Espana. We were staying right on the zocalo so there was always a lot going on and it was very busy.
Every afternoon we were caught in a major downpour! We always tried to be back before the expected storms, but always seemed to be caught out and ended up soaked. We have discovered the rain is a daily thing here. Its usually acompanied by thunder and lightning too. I guess thats what happens when you come to Mexico in the rainy season!
