Judy's joined the 50s Club ....and what a great advert she is ! Looking good !
Today was another 1st for me ...there have been many on this trip...declaring a beach the best I have ever seen and that in the driving rain. Cathedral Cove near Hahei certainly deserves the title, even in the rain. Just amazing cave and rock formations, beautiful water and just amazing trees right on the beach. On a perfect day ...this is paradise ! We were hoping to do a sea-kayaking trip around the coast and the beautiful coves, but not to be due to the rain and wind. At least the farmers are a little happier !
On driving around the Coromandel Peninsula, another magical wonderland of steep cliffs, dense rainforests and severely windy roads (one corner had a sign for a suggested speed of 15 km/h to make it around the corner safely!) it seemed as if the rain of the last 2 days had already had an impact and some green was coming through on the grass on the rolling hills. Beautiful beautiful countryside and a real oceanfront drive ...literally a few metres from the ocean and right next to the beach for miles. Beaches change from white sand to black sand to black pebbles to large black rocks, never a dull moment.
Coromandel and Thames (where we are staying tonight) are towns that were established during the goldrush of the 1880s and the historic buildings still give it the image of the towns you see in old Western movies.
The Coromandel peninsula looks like holiday territory interspersed with farming activity. A very quiet way of life only about 130 km away from Auckland.
Oh yes ...and just for Mare ...I saw warning signs for Tsunami Evacuation Routes ! The problem is that one often hears sirens that sound like wartime airraid sirens....but have no idea what they are for. Seeing that we have not seen any locals run for the hills seems to indicate that we have not experienced a tsunami warning yet.
Beautiful country ...even in the rain. Luckily it is still warm...so all good !
