Took a cab from the airport because once again I over packed. I can't seem to help myself. Poor Joey.. He good humoredly drags my bags from place to place. We check in to the smallest room I have seen for two people and quickly notice - no AC ... A small electric fan sits in the corner, unplugged. Of course we are in the middle of a heat wave, so we open a window to a lovely view. Drop the bags and take a walk, it is lovely! We walk, cross the river, taking pix, and hmm.. Looks like rain. Let's head back to the hotel. Then the thunderstorm breaks! So glad to be inside! So we search for an .outlet to plug in the fan - and find that there is but one by the bed, occupied by the minibar. Outgrows the minibar, in goes the fan. Aaah. Check emails, battery is low. Uh oh.. Fan or communication? Let's go eat ! The rain has stopped. But I take my handy raincoat, just in case. Joey wants to find bratwurst and sauerkraut and there are at least 4 restaurants and 2 bars per block. We walk for blocks.. No bratwurst. No sauerkraut. We stop at a little bar and shared a plate of some kind of meat dog and fries with an apple sauce (not applesauce, as the menu said) but the waitress was lively and from Colombia, so we had fun speaking with her in espanol! After returning to the hotel we were happy to stay in and try to figure out how to work an old Brookstone converter to charge the iPhone (we had found another outlet by the door, but if we plugged in the converter we couldn't open the door! Long story short, we slept little despite a quite comfortable bed, since it was noisy with windows open and drunken tourists in the bars below. Breakfast was wonderful, tho - with a lovely spread of cheeses, ham, fruits, breads, etc. then we packed up, and headed for the train station! Off to Milano!
July 3:
Train station: our train was cancelled. Everyone was in a tizzy - finally a conductor who spoke English so we could all understand that they were sending a special train to take us to the connecting train that would take us to Milano Centrale. With the hiccup, we only arrived 15 minutes late, and into the loving arms of my cousin Raffaella!
