Day 4
- After having a good night's sleep, woke up at 10 in the morning & went down for breakfast. €5 for breakfast was a bit pricey in my opinion. Returned to the room after that to chill for a bit & get ready before going out for the walking tour. Arrived at the station a bit late & weren't able to make it in time for the tour. Underestimated the time needed in switching trains & getting lost in between. Not surprising. Bought an all day metro pass which I thought wasn't necessary as nobody checked the tickets. Weird. Decided to wander around by ourselves & explore the city.
Walked to the Berlin Cathedral & was throughly amazed by its massive structure & design. Took lots of pictures in front of the cathedral - one of the few buildings worth spending time snapping random shots. Next, walked to the Brandenburg Gate. Took a few more shots there before deciding to stop for a local German beer by the park. Chilled at the park for a bit while being entertained by two musicians. Moved on to the Jewish Holocaust memorial after that. Stopped by a cafe to have a cold slush drink to cool down the heat & use their WiFi.
It then started raining as we made our way back to the hostel. Stopped by at H&M for a bit while the girls browsed around. Strangely, the mens section was located in another building. Bought Chinese takeway at the station for dinner - fried noodles with crispy duck for €4.50. Being backpackers on a tight budget, chinese food & cheap doner kebabs are always welcomed. Chilled at the hostel & had a beer at the bar downstairs. Had to stay in the lobby to use the WiFi & they had this weird sytem where you had to get a ticket every hour to continue using the internet. Annoying indeed. Did a bit of research on what to do for the following days before calling it a night.
Day 5
- Woke up at 10 in the morning & headed downstairs for breakfast. Returned to the room to get ready & head out to the city for the free walking tour at 1. Made our way to the meeting point by metro. Met up with the guide just outside a Starbucks outlet. Wasn't too hard to locate. The free walking tour was genuinley interesting. The various subculture of Berlin was explained in detail as we made our way around the city. Our Scottish guide, Callum was very enthusiastic & informative. He moved to Berlin 4 years ago & seemed to know the city really well. Our first stop was a former train station which was covered with lots of graffiti by local artists. There was a flea market around the area too. Had a great time exploring that.
Visited a few more interesting spots around the city. This included a walk by the Turkish part of the city, a former squatter place & other various buildings with graffiti tagged on them. After the tour ended, we made our way to the East Berlin Gallery along the Berlin wall. Have always wanted to visit this landmark & look at the beautiful artwork from various artists. Walked from one end of the wall to the other and took lots of pictures along the way. After that, we decided to go to a mall to find something to eat - only to discover that shops & supermarkets in Germany do not usually open on Sundays. Somehow, this gives off an impression that Germany is a lazy nation. Most parts of the city was relatively quiet too.
Feeling defeated, we made our way back to the hostel. Stopped by to grab a couple of burgers from McD for my dinner. Cheap & fast food, can't go wrong with that. Returned to the hostel & got myself a beer at the bar. Needed a drink after a long day out. Enjoyed my beer while chilling in the room. Great day in general. Went to bed fairly early after that.
Day 6
- Woke up at 10 in the morning after snoozing my alarm a couple of times. After having breakfast, we made our way to the Olympic Stadium which was situated literally at the other end of the city. Pretty interesting place to visit. Paid to enter the stadium & took a few pictures around the area. Found out about this local club, Hertha Berlin that plays in the stadium. Typical average German club that was just promoted to the Bundesliga. Not a good one.
Returned to the hostel after that to collect our backpacks before making our way to the main train station. Rushed to grab a couple of burgers at McDonald's but had to wait in line for more than 20 minutes. So much for fast food. Made it in time for our train to Prague with just a few minutes to spare. Once we were settled down in the train, the journey was pleasant. The beautiful scenery & views from the train were breathtaking!
Arrived in Prague around 7 in the evening & decided to take a cab to the hostel. Journey was somehow cheaper than expected. Checked in to our hostel & rested for a bit before deciding to go out for dinner. Found this cheap local restaurant just by the corner of our hostel & had a feast over there. Had a traditional Czech meal which consisted of dumplings & a good pint of Czech Pilsner beer. All for less than €10 - bargain indeed! Great meal, defintely coming back the next day to try their other dishes.
