Last night we went to George's (a different George- classic Greek name) house for dinner. He made an amazing feast of roasted potatoes, fried vegetables, tomato salad, an a giant piece of pork. It was so amazing! He lives in this well worn bungalow spread over one floor with a distant ocean view that pokes out beyond the heavy, humid, greenery. He told stories of the previous owners throwing illicit parties in the 60s where name brand fashion designers, like Armani, would escape to Greece for some fun.
After dinner some of their friends joined us and we drank wine and chatted before we headed down to the village centre for a "bani- giri", which is a traditional Greek village party. Hundreds of tables and chairs were set up on a gravel field where locals drank wine, ate pork and danced. George's twin daughters tried to teach me some of the traditional dancing which happens in a circle and is a series of slow, erratic and somewhat lurking steps. At the party we joined in with groups of families dresses up in their party clothes. Most of them ended up shunning us as we were clearly tourists or "crazies" (ie- not from that village). Well, George is from that village but he didn't dance with us... or seem to care what anyone thought of him. The band, oh the band! A group of 5-8 musicians playing a variety of instruments, like drums, guitars, clarinets and such and creating this wonderful racket. Occasionally a beautiful Greek woman would get up on stage and sing.
We carried on to a beach bar in Tolo where we danced and chatted to the wee hours. I shared some late night take out with a mommy cat and her kitten by tossing them pieces of my fries and chicken.
We slept in very late and will head to the beach for a swim followed by a meal of fresh fish in a nearby village.
