Alright My Hippy Buddies,
My plan for San Fran was to meet up with some friends that live in San Fran. Just before I got there, my friends Rob and Dawn let me know that they were going away for their wedding anniversary and wouldn’t be around when I was there. Rob had planned a surprise holiday for the family and didn’t know when I was getting there and by pure bad luck the two coincided on the same week.
I had been to San Fran before and wanted to see the things I did not get to see the first time around. Funnily enough I had not been over the Golden Gate Bridge before. San Fran is one of my favourite cities and probably the only USA city that I would ever live in if I had to. The people are cool and due to the earth quakes there are not that many tall buildings and this makes the city less offensive and gives the place more of a neighbourhood feel. The hills also afford beautiful views on nearly every corner.
Now that I had more free time to explore as I wasn’t going to be seeing Rob and Dawn I decided to go on a camping trip for three days in Yosemite National Park. I wanted to go there as one of the Native American guys that I met in the Grand Canyon told me I should check it out as he used to go there and felt a similar spirituality there that I felt in the Grand Canyon. The place was beautiful but packed solid with snap happy tourists and loads of annoying kids. Unfortunately, loud kids and their lazy parents dashed any chance of peace or spirituality.
I enjoyed my time there but felt it would be so much better in the low season. I was also shocked by the amount of trees with fire damage. Loads of trees had been destroyed by unauthorised BBQ’s and fires that made me dislike the families there all the more. The group that I went with were quite mixed. Most of them were fairly cool but when it came to organising the campsite or dinner there was a few that could never be found until the work had been done. Two English guys had planned to visit all the fast food chains in he States and take a picture outside each one. They were a fountain of knowledge when it came to the best burger and fries. Travelling does present some funny characters!
The rest of my time was spent wandering the streets of San Fran trying to find those hidden away gems that many cities hide from tourists. To my pleasure I found loads of them and met some really interesting people and some totally crazies in some of the poorer parts of the city.
I was also very lucky to meet up with Molly (Simons fiancé) and her friends. Erin, Yvette, and all the others were so nice and welcoming and made me feel very comfortable while I was there. Meeting great people is one of the true joys of travelling.
San Fran is one of those rare cities that you feel instantly comfortable in almost like you have lived there for years. Simon is now lucky enough to be moving there with Molly. From San Fran I decided that I needed to get back to the real America and headed for Hollywood!
See you on the strip, E,
