We have just returned to the mainland in order to catch our evening flight to LA, when we will cross the international date line (it's freaky - we leave Fiji Saturday evening and arrive in America Saturday afternoon), so I thought I would reaquaint myself with the internet while we hang around...
Hit by Fiji heat as soon as we left the plane (and it's the middle of winter here), we were greeted by lots of friendly Fijians, one of whom took us to the travel agents (apparently they are open at 11pm...) to sort out our time here. Crashing into bed in our hostel at midnight, we were up early the next day to catch a boat to Mana Island - a very pretty little island in the Mamanucas (where Castaway was filmed, apparently). Our accomodation was rather Spartan (no working fan, no electricity in the bathroom, a glorified tap for a shower and the water supply had a tendency to fail), but it mattered little in paradise. Our days here were mostly dedicated to sunbathing, but we managed an afternoon walk along the coast, going along idyllic deserted beaches and clambering over a smattering of rocks. I also did a lot of snorkelling, being easily amused by the little fish (and the not-so-little), the blue starfish that look like bean-bags and the sound of the fish munching on coral. One evening we were treated to 'island night', which involved a lot of dancing - hula dancing, knife dancing (and with a blindfold on), and fire dancing on the beach, which was awesome (despite one of the guys setting fire to his shoulder).
We then moved on to Malolo Island, where we upped the budget a tad and treated ourselves to a private beachside bungalow, which was very swanky! Life was equally relaxed here, as we did more sunbathing (tough life), snorkelling and a spot of kayaking (Dad will be proud) to a couple of neighbouring islands. I like how Fiji life revolves around the beach and the sea!
