Australia is such a vast country, and looking at the map was quite daunting. We decided to head for Albany on the south coast, but made it there quicker than expected so decided to go another 500km to Esperance. All that distance and all we saw was the odd truck train and dead kangaroos.Esperance is like what we think england looked like in the 1970's its said to have the best beaches in west oz .....they werent that good but it was cold, wet and windy, so much for oz having really hot weather we havent seen any
We started driving again, driving down the longest straight road in the world. The landscape was changing every few hundred km's from bigs trees with no bark to dessert like terain, across the southern end of the nullarbor plains - which means no trees, and they are right there was nothing but the odd bush. We stopped to take in the view and could see miles and miles of nothing.
Eventually we arrived at a roadhouse in a village called Maudrabilla and filled up with petrol. Simon said he would kill for a drink and discovered the petrol station was also a bar and motel so we parked up and went for a drink and both got really drunk with the ozzie truckers it was the best night so far in oz
We got going again in the morning quite hungover after all the emu beer and drove out of Western, in to South Australia. We drove for ages and stopped at a place called Smokey Bay where we went fishing on the pier but it was so cold that we didnt stay long. Smokey bay was a sleepy eary village that looked like somthing out of a horror movie. We drove to Streaky Bay and found somewhere to stay and went to the pub/betting office/hotel/resturant.
Then back to driving we saw murphys haystacks which are giant inselbergs(rocks) sticking up out of the ground. Then to a place called Venus Bay where we made lunch and went for a walk along the sand dunes and did a bit of dolphin spotting we were the only people about, everywhere was deserted. We drove along the coast to a place called Elliston where we had dinner and went to the beach to watch the sunset and do some evening fishing......Again we caught nothing
The next day we drove to Port Lincon and went fishing again this time Simon caught a mackeral, which we bbq'd and had for dinner in a place called Tumby Bay which is where we stayed. Simon has the fishing bug and that night we went to the peir and did some more this time Emma caught 2 squid and simon caught two fish - not sure what they were but simon broke his rod bashing them over the head.
Back on te road again we stopped at a 'town' called whyalla and went fishing again and it was cold again so we got back in the van and started driving again. We stopped at a place called Port Augusta the most awful looking town so far We spent about an hour driving about trying to find somewhere to get somthing to eat but everywhere was shut, its saturday afternoon and the place is like a goast town.
There is not alot to do in this part of the country, we are both missing the excitement of Asia
