We headed up over the Alps cutting into central South Island. As soon as we started descending the other side of the mountains the cloud broke and glorious sunshine abound. Traversing gorges by single track wooden bridges and following rivers by roads cut precariously into the valley walls we then skirted immense wind swept lake shores before arriving at the southern tip of Lake Wanaka. We camped on the shores of the lake with stunning views across the water to the snow capped peaks beyond; providing peace and tranquility. Sunset BBQ and a twilight stroll along the lake shore and yet another spectacular starry sky.
Sledging was the order of the day, but not on snow, this was white water sledging, which involves throwing ourselves down rapids with only a wetsuit and plastic 'sledge' to keep afloat. We tackled the Man Eater, Rodeo and Roller Coaster, barelling and being sucked into whirlpools along the way. Then we went back and did it all again. Harder work than it looks but great fun.
