Hello!
Thursday, we left Airlie Beach, and after a coach, a ferry and a bus journey we finally arrived at Bungalow Bay YHA, Magnetic Island. Here we had our own ensuite cabin, called the Penthouse - Nice!! We settled in and made it just in time for the rainbow lorikeets feeding. The ranger passed Emma a bowl of food, and before she knew it she had hundreds of birds all over her - not quite what she expected.
Friday, today we were up early for our bush tucker brunch and wildlife experience. We started with our bush tucker brunch - this was a massive champagne breakfast, where we met Australian animals and cooked our own toast over an open fire. From here we were taken on an interactive tour of the wildlife sanctury. During the tour we got to hold, a red tailed black cockatoo, a 2 year old salt water crocodile and a blue tongued lizzard. Next up was the meanest of the bunch, the koalas. We had our photos taken holding a koala, but they are not as cute and cuddly as they appear, as they have extremely sharp claws and a tendancy to bite. Last up was the 7ft carpet python, Emma's favourite, and even Lee had a hold. The ranger then took us on a guided bush walk where we spotted many butterflies and koalas. This was a great way to interact with Australia's animals and fill your belly at the same time.
We hired a little 4wd, and spent the afternoon exploring the western side of the island. This was great fun and even gave our legs a rest. Our first stop was Geoffrey Bay, this is home to many wild rock wallabies. We went prepared, and took carrot and bread to entice them out, and eventually had sat still for long enough that we managed to hand feed them. Our next stop was Picnic Bay, where we walked along the beach and out along the 200 metre jetty. We went back to the car and drove along a dirt track, crossing many creeks, to eventually arrive at West Point. From here the mainland is only 8kms away. We then drove back past Nelly Bay, to Alma Bay where we paddled our feet on the beach. We then drove to Horseshoe Bay where we took in the views before returning to the YHA for dinner. We had many dinner guests, in the form of geckos, frogs and a pair of possums, along with a vast array of flying insects. But what do you expect in the middle of a national park??!!
Saturday, we had the car until lunch time, so we spent the morning driving around the bays on the eastern side of the island. We returned to the YHA to give back the car - oh no! and were then left to rely on our legs to carry us down to Horseshoe Bay beach, where we strolled along soaking up the afternoon sun. This was a great relaxing way to spend our last afternoon on the island.
Sunday morning, we made the trek back to Townsville to catch the Greyhound upto Mission Beach.
Lots of Love,
Emma and Lee
