Plaza de Mayo
This is the city's first central plaza. It was founded in 1580 and is the symbol of Argentina's rocky history. The name commemorates the May revolution of 1810 that began Argentina's process of independence from Spain. So much history has happened in this plaza- military bombings in 1955, the famous Eva Peron shouting from the Casa Rosada's balcony, etc. Every Thursday in this square, the Madres protest the disappearance of their children (the "dirty war" of Argentina, worth looking up on the Internet)- we haven't seen it yet but it's on our list of things to do.
