Our next stop was Boston, Massachusetts. This is a very pleasant place and definitely the most British of all the cities we visited. Firstly we headed to Harvard University, turns out it really is just an inferior Oxford. Continuing the university theme, we also went to the 40 000 or so capacity Boston college football stadium. There we saw a college football accompanied by cheerleaders, flag girls and a marching band. All good fun. Another highlight of Boston was a pub. Em chowed down to a lobster and I got meatloaf, many a merry pint was had. Thus our adventures in Boston town were concluded.
We then rented a car for the next few days. First stop was the Samuel Adams brewery. It was interesting to see how beer is made, even better to try it free afterwards. The next day and a half was spent in Cape Cod. There we rented bikes and had a lovely cycle through distinctly Essex like countryside. We also tried lots of seafood, though in the US it seems standard to serve it all deep-fried. Lastly we got our fill of tacky witch paraphernalia in Salem and visited the John Heard (no relation) house in north Massachusetts.
Then we returned the car and were off to Niagara. On the way we visited Albany, New York. There we enjoyed some Popeye's chicken and a relaxing evening.
We crossed the border to stay on the Canadian side of Niagara (my first trip to Canada). The town seems to be like a Las Vegas for 10 year olds; Lego worlds, arcades and the like. Naturally I loved it. The falls were also fantastic. We got to see them up close on the Maid of the Mist, and they truly are breath taking.
It was then back to the good old USA for our train to Chicago; our last stop. We had a dull day planned with about 12 hours to kill waiting for a train connection. Fortunately we were hailed by a passing cabby. An amusing day ensued. The over enthusiastic cab driver got Em signed up to a Muslim convention, women only. Casually avoiding said convention we instead enjoyed the delights of the nearby mall and cinema complex, the largest in the Buffalo-Niagara area. Fortunately our association with the convention got us free bag storage and complimentary transportation to the train station from a hotel we never stayed at. We then got the train to Chicago without mishap, feeling rather pleased with ourselves.
