Ahead of visiting Machu Picchu and as a starting point for those brave enough to do some trekking in the rainy season in Peru we took a trip out of Cuzco for a couple to days to see the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The landscape was stunning and on the way to the main ruins in Ollantaytambo we called into a little village called Pisac which has an Inca citadel high above the village with a plunging gorge on either side. I have attached a picture of a very cheerfully dressed local lady on her way to the market. She gave me a big wave as she went on her way so I decided she wouldn't mind making an appearance in my blog!
In the afternoon we visited the ruins at Ollantaytanbo which is said to have the best surviving example of Inca planning with a magnificent fortress built into the mountainside. The size of the rocks used to build the fortress were huge which made us wonder how on earth they transported them across the mountains 700 years ago. The town itself is still largely unchanged from 700 years ago with cute little cobbled streets and people living today in the houses of heir ancestors.
The next day those doing the Lares trek ( an alternative trek to the Inca Trail) headed off. I decided when booking not to attempt the 3 day hike in the rain so will have to come back another time to brave the Inca Trail. I am back in Cuzco for a couple to days and then we re group to visit Machu Picchu which will be exciting. It's 8am here so off to breakfast and then I'm doing a half day horse riding trek around the ruins situated just outside of Cuzco. Fingers crossed it stays dry for me!!!
