These dogs are really interesting, they basically get bonded to a mob of cattle and live outside with them, protecting them from dingoes etc. You aren't supposed to treat them as pets otherwise they'd just coming running back to the house!

I missed this photo last time. Did you know that we had a maremma sheep dog for a year when I was about 10 (your Mum about 15). It was a disaster as he was untrainable, used to run away whenever you let him off the lead, and dug up the garden all over! He went to live somewhere with a lot more ground int he end - ask Granny about him- he was called Carlo.
