Hiya! Just in Brisbane airport. Flew from Jakarta to Hong Kong then Hong Kong to Brisbane and finally I'll be flying to Cairns! Very very exhausted. Yesterday in Jakarta I told Dad that the flight was as 23.15 as I thought it was, he double checked and realised it was 15.05!! So 8 hours earlier then I thought. Luckily we realised 2 hours before we needed to leave the airport so again in a very tight schedule we just made it to the airport.
The last few days of Jakarta was very interesting, we didn't really see much of Jakarta as we were both working so much and any free time we were too tired to do anything. But that German guy who works for the British embassey that Dad bumped into in our hotel managed to set us up with some really impressive people to meet and talk about DreamAid with. On thursday night we met Onte and his friend and their English co-worker Dominic, all reallly lovely guys. Onte is a bit of a celebrity in Indonesia, he's done loads of work for the logging industry starting off as just a farmer. Now he's uncovered a Chinese mafia which illegally ships logs and makes an absolute fortune, watching a video he made whilst going undercover we learnt that these Chinese people buy the logs of really really poor people on the Indonesian islands for 1$ and then sells them for 9,000$!! Absolutely gross how they're ripping these people off who live in poverty. Anyway we think we'll be able to team up with Onte in selling handicrafts people make out of the cut offs of the logs on DreamAid so that'll be very interesting!
On friday night Dad and I decided we needed to venture out of the hotel and see a bit more of 'real' Indonesia, although we were told it doesn't really exsist in Jakarta as it's just another big city. Anyway the hotel told us about this 'backpackers' street so we thought we'd go there! Really interesting, was all Indonesian people, no Westerners with loads of stalls all down the street selling lots of food. We had a meal in this Chinese restaurant where you chose the goods you wanted to eat and then in the middle of the table was a gas ring type thing which had a bowl of hot water on it, so you boiled the water, put all your food in and then ate it when it was ready! Very interesting and made a nice change to be somewhere local other then another shopping mall! Saw a really little homeless boy making a bed out of cardboard for the night, he was so cute and didn't even have any shoes :(:(:( I wanted to take him home with me! Doubt mum would of liked that though aha.
On saturday as we thought our flight wasn't until late at night we were planning on venturing out of the city to a big tropical garden place where Dominic said was a nice place to go but unfortunately with me reading the itinery wrong we didn't get the chance!
Will update again once in Cairns but the plan is to visit 'Green Island' tomorrow for the day which looks absolutely gorgeous and do a dive, very scared but excited for that!
Going to have a shower now in the Quantas lounge to try and wake myself up. Sorry if spelling and grammar are awful in this update, I'm so tired I can barely think what I'm writing haha.
Will update soon!
Lots of love,
Eve xxxx <3
