Perth, Western Australia
Hi everybody!! Sorry it's been so long since we updated this - but we've been busy having lots of fun! We are now on our second day in Perth. We are staying in a hostel with other backpackers. We arrived Thursday, and by Friday, Eddies friend who lives over here had found him some work - he starts Wed (lucky git). I, however, am still searching for a job. Don't think we will be here long enough for me to get a teaching job - but wait and see.
Thailand, Malaysia & Singapore were fantastic. We met some fab people and visited some amazing places. Hopefully you will be able to see some of them if I can upload the photo's! I'm just going to give a little summary on what we thought about each place. Enjoy!
Bangkok: MENTAL! It's the busiest, dirtiest city I have ever been to, but the locals were friendly. They sold insects to eat on the street. There were loads of food stalls. We basically visited lots of temples for the two days. I was looking forward to leaving! We didn't see any of the trouble thats there at the moment, luckily. Although we did see a police man smack a tramp across the face at the police station! Ouch!
Khao Sok National Park: Absolutely beautiful! We loved it here. Up in the mountains, away from the city. We had to get the overnight train to get there, which was an experience! My god the Germans on that train were so noisey! We floated down the river on big inflatable rings, which was fab. The next day, we did a lake trip, which included a visit to a cave & a lake resort where people stayed. It was a great day. So beatiful. Back at our accomodation, the food was very nice & the cocktails were decorated with the nicest flowers (see phots).
Krabi: The beaches in this area are beatiful. This is near the location for Leonardo Decaprio's film The Beach, so you can imagine how stunning the beaches were. Unfortunately, the beaches were covered in tourists, on day trips, just like ours. This was a fantastic area, but was spoilt by the tourists. It would have been better to visit here about 10-15 yrs ago. The town was nice though. Great restaurants and an Irish Bar, where I managed to get some cider; yay!!
Penang: small version of Bangkok, but with less to see. Didn't like it.
Cameron Highlands: Loved it here, but we only stayed one night. Its the Malay version of the Lake District. We had a Chinese Steamboat for dinner, which was an experience! Went for a walk with our German frieands into the jungle in the day, which was really good.
Kuala Lumpa: amazing for shopping! Malaysia is a bit more organised and civalised compared to Thailand & we could relax a bit more. Prices were getting more expensive though, the more western a place was. We visited the Two Towers at night, which was stunning.
Melaka: nice enough small city. Most cities here have a Chinatown & Little India districts, so we went round these in the day and visited a Maritime Museum. Went for dinner at a place called Geographers cafe, which was fab. We only stayed one night here.
Singapore: an amazing city. A nicer, cleaner and modern version of London basically. It was expensive, but easy to get around. There was so much to see and do. We managed to get to Singapore Zoo and Sentosa Island to visit Underwater World & see a dolphin show. You get the cable carts over to the island, passing above the harbour. There is a heck of a lot of building work going on here & this area was very touristy. Singapore was very western & expensive. Im not dead keen on such big cities, so we were looking forward to Ausyralia!
Perth: Its a lovely city! Not to big. Its the capital of Western Australia state, so the prices are about the same as back home. People are really friendlyover here. We spent our first 2 nights at a hotel in the CBD by the Swan River. It's gorgeous down there, and near the park, but was too expensive for us to stay long. So now we are in a hostel, at least until Wednesday, in an area called Northbridge, on Newcastle Street! It's not what you'd call the high life, but it will do untill we find a place to live in Joondalup, a suburb of Perth. We're just getting ourselves set up at the mo. Eddies got a job, starting Wed, and Im still looking. We are going to get a car. Today is Saturday 29th Nov and tomorrow we are going to Scarborough beach I think. We are enjoying it so far, but I am looking forward to getting set up in a job & appartment. Off in search of the Olympic size swimming pool now!!
Will be on again as soon as anything interesting happens!
Lots of love, Claire & Eddie xx
