Whirlwind trip to Rome and checked a bunch of monuments/fountains/paintings off the list of must see's. Unexpectedly, we planned a trip to Rome the same weekend as Palm Sunday and the Rome Marathon. The city was bustling, as I'm sure it is most of the time. But we felt particularly lucky to be able to see the Pope give Mass in St. Peter's Square and walk down major thorough fares that were open only to foot traffic for the marathon. I think we walked at least 26.2 miles!
Arriving in the morning on Saturday, Todd and I went separate ways for the day. He went to the 6 Nations rugby game between Italy and Scotland, while I spent the day visiting my dear friend (and fellow Marlborough violet) Mandy. I felt so lucky to have a tour guide who could translate all that she has discovered in her 6 months in Rome. I also got access to the American Institute which was a rare treat!
Leaving Sunday evening, Todd and I headed out early to check out the sights. We walked to the Vatican and were pleasantly surprised that Mass would be held outside in the square. It was impressive to be in this venue with all of the pilgrims, as well as fellow spectators. The influence of religion was palpable. Originally, we were going to "swing by" the Vatican but were compelled to stay for the service. The rest of the day was spent searching for the major sights, great pizza, and gelato.
We threw our coins in Trevi Fountain so we will be back!
