Well folks is been a wonderful couple of days! I left YYC at around 0830 hours on the 12th bound for CR with only my backpack and dreams. The flights were good all around with MOSTLY calm skies. A quick 4 hour layover in Houston, TX and then another 3 hours in the air. The plane arrived in Liberia around 2130, only about 15 mins late. Through customs and i was free. i met up with my pre-arranged cab driver for the hour and a half ride into Samara. Heilar is the brother-in-law of the owner of the beach house i am staying at and a great guy. The only problem was that he spoke very little english and i have not exactly been diligent with my studies leading up to this trip! So there i was now riding down the hi-way with Heilar picking through my Spanish phrase book and trying to communicate with him. It was awesome. Despite the language barrier we laughed and i managed to find out that he was the father of 8 little ones and lived in Nicoya where he worked as a cab driver. He has 'friends' in the police here and comes from a big family himself. Speaking of the cab ride it was an adventure in more than one respect. Heilar's car developed (or previously had) two slow tire leaks on the passenger side. We had to stop several times for air along the way. I'm really glad that the service stations were open because im not too sure if he had a spare tire, and we were pretty much in the jungle most of the time. Anywho, i arrived safe and sound to the beautiful beach house at around 2315. bed!! The last couple of days have seen me getting my bearings, checking out car rentals and hanging with the locals. They call themselves 'Tico's or Tica's', depending on gender. Thanks to Kurt and Jules I had an amazing Tico breakfast in a back street outdoor restaurant. They showed me around a bit and we hit the beach for a swim. Ive been getiing in the water a couple times of day. I love the feeling of the salt water and it is so warm here.....love it! The food is wonderful, fresh fruit, vegetables, fish and rice. The only spices i've been using is hot sauce........hot sauce on my eggs and rice.....mmmmmmmmm. Not too expensive either compared to back home. 18 beers, tomatoes, mango, oranges, lettuce, bag of rice, hot sauce, fish, onion all for about $37 USD. Yesterday i wandered around town for most of the day, went to the bank and so forth. Relaxed, swam a bit and then went out with Mike and his family for a few beers at some Tico haunts. What a fun time, just meeting people from town and listening to all the Spanish. Understanding only about 1% of what i heard but all the while picking up more each day. Well, gotta go the waves are calling me. Time for some surfing and then i'm renting a car and heading for some other local towns to explore. I'm hoping to stay in Playa del Coco tonight. Wish me luck!
