Mennonites School outside of San Ignacio. Like the Amish of Pennsylvania, the Mennonites have strict religion-based values. Traditional group reject any form of mechanization of technology. The progressives, many of them came from Canada, speak English and use tractors and trucks. The strict conservative group we saw in Burton Creek Cave area still ride in horse and buggies. They speak German and wear denim overalls and straw cowboy hats. In 17th century, they left Netherlands for Prussia and Russia. In 1870s, Russia insisted on military assignment and they moved to Canada. After WW1, Canadian government demanded to be taught in English in their school so they moved to Mexico. In 1950s, Mexican government insisted on Social Security program on them so they packed up and moved again to find their peace land and did in Belize. We never thought of seeing Mennonites blond men and women in Central America.
