Chain of Craters Rd once connected to Hwys 130 allowing traffic between the Volcanoes National Pak and Hilo via Puna. Then by 1979, it was back in service. However, Kilauea's active flows cut the link again in 1988, burying a 9 mile stretch of the road. Alas.
