Rome Colosseum
Another view of the Colosseum showing the multiple wall set up of the building. The outer wall is 48 metres tall and has had to have additions to its ends to stabilize the structure as some of the outer walls have fallen over the years due to earthquakes etc. The stone used is travertine block mortared to give strength and it is estimated over 100 thousand cubic metres was used just in the outer walls. The arena area measured 189 x156 metres and had a wooden floor covered with sand. Under this were multiple levels of cages and rooms to house animals and gladiators etc who used to fight or perform for the crowds.
