These bottles show the various sizes for the champagne range from .75 litre through to 15 litre which is a lot of champagne for anyone to drink. Bottles are apparently much thicker now than in the old days so they can contain the pressure build up during the maturing of the champagne. Pressure can be up to 9 bar which even now can break some of the bottles but apparently not as many as used to break.
