Looking down on the port area from the citadel where there was once a very large fort complex guarding the port and old town. The fort was destroyed many years ago by conquerers of the area and not rebuilt. Originally the Nice area was part of Italy but chose to join France in the 1860s as France was economically better off than Italy at the time and was part of an agreement of France helping Italy with a war against Austria or so the story goes. You can still very much see the Italian influence in the area.
