The infamous Berlin Wall complete with guard tower with no mans land under surveillance from the towers and constant roaming patrols. The wall separating East and West Berlin was around 43 kilometers across the centre of the city but in total West Berlin was surrounded by walls of 111 kilometers in length completely isolating it with the only way in or out by aircraft. This did not stop people trying to get to the West though and to freedom from the oppressive life of the Eastern bloc countries. Before the wall was built around 3.5 million people escaped through West Berlin but after installation of the wall this just about stopped with around 5000 attempting to escape during the life of the wall between 1961 and 1989. It is estimated between 136 and 200 people died trying to go over the walls into West Berlin. Note the flurry of snow falling in the photo, it started as we climbed the tower to view this part of the wall and continued for around an hour.
