Avignon - Pont Saint Benezet
The Pont d'Avignon as it is more widely known is the remains of the stone bridge containing 22 arches which connected Avignon across the Rhone river to Villeneuve les Avignon a smaller town of the medieval times. The bridge has been destroyed by invaders, rebuilt and many times destroyed by floods. The four arches remaining date from around 1277 and still on the bridge is the chapel of Saint Nicholas (seen between the trees) which has 4 levels to it and was built with the original structure and added to as time went by. It is an outstandingly beautiful structure enhanced by the meandering Rhone river which has been its downfall on many occasions due to its serious flooding.
