Tamil Nadu - Mamallapuram, Pondicherry, Auroville, Kodaikanal
A friend of mine kindly gave me The Rough Guide to India and subtitled it with "Over Crowded, Over Whelming and Over Rated" - this has not been the case during our first encounter of this ancient and vibrant land - no doubt it is because we started in the South in the state of Tamil Nadu exploring the small beach towns, French colonial cities and mountainous tea plantations.
Mamallapuram - Beautiful coloured sarees lined the picturesque Shore Temple and huge stone monoliths.
Kodaikanal - Took a 2-day hike in the mountain region up to the spectacular tea plantations. The lime green hills against the blue sky made it look like the MS desktop photo.
Pondicherry - The former capital of French India, and an important trade route between Rome and the Far East, allowed us time to stroll through the wide tree-lined boulevards, enjoy the pastel coloured colonial buildings and take a rather odd day- trip to a New Age Colony called Auroville.
