Karnataka - Mysore, Bangalore, Hampi and Vijayanagar Kingdom
Mysore - An amazing Raj Palace and colourful market of powder paints, perfume, spices, woodworking and ghee (Indian sweets) was sampled during our first Indian city.
Bangalore - Heading inland, we made a brief stop in Bangalore to get a taste of an Indian modern city. Dubbed the second Silicon Valley, it is home to 1200 I.T. firms and is the world's second largest software producer.
Hampi - Marvellous bedrock landscape of red boulder mountains, with an oasis of green palms lining the river, formed the backdrop for the temples and ruins of the former southern capital of the Vigayanagar Kingdom.
Hampi was the chosen spot for this kingdom as it was known for its' spiritual powers. The Hindu kingdom was built over a period of 235 years and once home to 30,000 people and a major trading centre. All that remains are ruins and temples as it was defeated in 1565 (1 temple remains as a major pilgrimage place where you can also get blessed by the elephant for a rupee). Enjoyed a hike at sunset to the monkey temple and had a nice surprise bumping into a former dancer, Cara, from the McGill Contemporary Dance Ensemble.
