It was certainly a LOOOOONG week in Tailem Bend. What a nightmare project!!! We arranged this work project way back in New Zealand and were excited about the idea of working with animals again and meeting new people. The reviews on this farm were outstanding and we took their word for it, so we were delighted when we were accepted... but all was not as we dreamed.
The lady we worked for was rude and barely spoke to us. The idea with these work trade projects is to do some work in return for food and accomodation. We can't grumble about the accomodation, we had a lovely little cabin all to ourselves but the food... there was none!!! We survived a week on bare scraps that were left in the fridge and hoped the chickens would lay some eggs for us. Ross and our fellow 'prisoner' Gilbert were doing maintenance tasks each day, which would have been fine, if she had the right tools and equipment for the job - and my job, along with the other girls, Chere and Audrey, was to water the plants. At a time when water is scarce anyway we wasted tons of it trying to keep these poor little dry plants alive... it was a tough week, the only blessing being that we met some lovely volunteers also trapped there and tried to have a giggle about it all.
Very, very lucky for us we have lovely relatives in Adelaide who rescued us from the farm and have taken us back under their wing while we search for some other projects in the area - we are forvever indebted to our relations Graham and Francey who thought they had gotten rid of us!! :-)
Let's hope we find something awesome to work on next.
