We had a long day today. We started early at 6am to catch the train to Kuranda. The train is over 100 years old and was built to connect Cairns to the gold fields. It was a big project and over 30 people died making the train.
The trip took an hour and a half. During the trip we stopped at Barron waterfall for 10 minutes. We liked the train trip, it was cool riding in 100 year old carriages. I fell asleep a few times on the train ride.
When we got to Kuranda we had lunch, there a lots of cafes up here. After lunch we went to the Bird Sanctuary. We had a great time. The birds flew onto us as we tried to feed them. The birds were also very smart, trying to steal mum's necklace and trying to look in her bag. They also tried unpicking the button on the top of dad's baseball cap. I saw some birds even trying to unzip people's bags. We spent ages at the bird sanctuary. So many birds and a lot of them friendly.
When we finished at the bird sanctuary we went next door to the butterfly farm. There were a huge amount of butterflies and so many different kinds. All you had to do was stand there and the butterflies would land on you. I had heaps of butterflies land on me because I was wearing a fluro coloured shirt. At one stage I had five butterflies on me. We also got to visit where they breed the butterflies and see how they look when they are caterpillars.
We caught the train to Kuranda and took to Skyway back. The Skyway is the worlds largest gondola and goes for 7kms. We got great views of the mountains around Kuranda and coming in to the station we had great views of Cairns.
Soon we were on the bus home and when we arrived back at the caravan park we headed for the pool.
Tomorrow we go to Green Island.
