The Dead Sea is the lowest sea on earth and is getting lower each year, as it gets lower it gets more salty. We tried to swim, swimming feels like being on a boogy board, floating on your back is quite comfortable. Mal ducked under - very stupid as when you surface, you can't open your eyes because they sting and you have to have your eyes washed in fresh water. There are new resorts being built all around here, Europeans think this place is a resort. It would be impossible to drown in this water. Di and some of the others covered themselves in Dead Sea mud - this would cost a fortune at a 5 star resort - great fun and your skin fels good!
Petra, possibly the ultimate historic site. The buildings which are tombs, have survived the earthquakes, conquering tribes, the scavengers and elements. These tombs although resembling the built architecture of that area are not actually buildings but sculptured out of the hills/mountains. Earthquakes did not destroy them and the stones could not be stolen. The loss of significance is that the later use as these tombs for housing has destroyed any elements of the original interiors, ie no inscriptions, burial jewels bowls etc. The facades are vey imposing but as originally built as tombs the space inside is only quite small.
We spent from 7.30am till 4.00pm on site with only a short break to eat our packaged lunch. We walked about 15 kms and climbed to 2 high places, one a sacrificial place the other a monastery that was carved similarly to the Treasury.
