We know the name as a wine growing area but Bordeaux is a large city on the Garonne River. The main part of the city has been rebuilt on classical lines in the 1800's with beautiful four to five storey buildings with large roof spaces and attic levels. There are wonderful public spaces, squares and long walking/shopping streets. We stayed in a good hotel opposite the station as we wanted to be on the train early next morning. Outside our hotel were a number of tram stops providing very modern flat floored trams with have no overhead wires in central heritage areas We used these trams to access the centre of town and have a jornt out into the suburbs.
The court precinct with heritage and new glassed walled building is very interesting; a very expensive solution to provide courts and university in the same complex. Timber beehive shaped court rooms, on stilts, sit partially within a glass building, the top of the beehives then protrude through the glass roof; must be a nightmare to maintain!
