Sepilok is a tourist attraction because it is home to the world famous Orangutan Rehabilitation Sanctuary. Initially we were just going to visit the centre as a day trip from Sandakan but then we changed our minds and decided to stay a night in one of the hostel complexes on the edge of the forest. Our accommodation was really nice and situated in pretty gardens complete with deer and ducks. The cente has 2 orangutan feedings every day which it opens to the general public, we went to the afternoon feeding. First we had to watch a short film giving us a brief introduction into the role of the sanctuary and the orangutan in general. Did you know that the orangutan is 96.4 parts human and that the word orangutan means 'man of the jungle'!!!
They can't guarantee that you will see orangutans at a feeding so at first everyone is quite tense but luckily for us within 5 minutes we could hear the rustling of leaves as one came nearer. The 2 orangutans who came to the feedng deck were both young mothers in fact one of them was the newest mother on the sanctuary as her baby was born in January. We watched there antics for about an hour before we were shepherded out of the centre and the doors closed until the next feeding.
