We have been on our first Shinkansen or bullet train today - we went from Osaka to Hiroshoma a distance of 214 miles and it took 1hr 45 mins travelling at 122mph. David had the window seat but complained that it was making his eyes hurt as we were going past things so quickly!
We are staying at the Hana Hostel in a Japanese style twin room - which basically means making your own futon up!
So far we love Japan - it is so peaceful and serene. Everywhere is clean, with sliding doors and everyone takes there shoes off when they enter somewhere. At the Hostel you have special shoes for wandering around in general and then another pair for using the toilet. It is so civilised! The other thing is that everything is automated so you never have to touch light switches, toilets flush automatically and I have even sat on my first heated toilet seat over here!!
We have been to Peace Park today which was the site of the hypocentre of the atomic bomb dropped on the 6 August 1945 at 8.15am. It was very moving and quite frightening at the same time. Some of the displays in the museum were really graphic and included real limbs and hair! The bomb caused the temperature to rise to approx 400 degrees for 3 seconds so you can imagine the destuction it caused.
Now we are going to go out for some light relief - I think we deserve it!
Panic - we have lost the camera....
