London
When planning my trip, I booked my flight from Barcelona to London online with Ryanair because it was cheap. I ended up flying into Luton airport which is a long way from the London city center where I was staying. I was dreading figuring out the bus/train journey from the airport into Kensington, it said online it was a two hour journey with train changes and walking...and me being directionally challenged, it would likely have been closer to three or four hours. I say would have been.....because I was saved by the kindness of strangers!
At the airport in Girona while in line to board the plane, I struck up a conversation with a couple and their mother. When we landed in London, I saw them again by the baggage claim and they offered me a ride! They assured me it was on their way but after being dropped off, I am sure they still had a ways to go to get home. I will definitely be paying the kindness forward to lost travelers when I get back to Calgary.
My time in London has been quick and again too short although I am so wiped out and missing home, I suspect I would be hard pressed to travel much longer. I am in awe of those who travel for months and at the same time I can see why they do it. It has taken me 37 years to finally fly across the pond and I guarantee it won't be more than a few months before I take off again.
London is...London, ripe with history around every corner, stories of wars, princes and princesses, kings and queens and murderers...yes they really seem to celebrate the likes of Jack the Ripper which I found odd. That was until I looked into the various festivals and celebrations around the world. The majority of celebrations are in fact in honour of very sad events and in honour of very bad people.
That said, the people in London are friendly and seem to be willing to assist in anyway they can. I loved the markets of Camden and am now off to find a Wal Mart to buy a new suitcase for my trip home, it's hard to believe I showed restraint whilst shopping here! A highlight was the Harry Potter tour (touring shooting locations and set inspirations), the tour guide was wonderful and I am sure was hitting on me....
I am off to see either Billy Elliot or Wizard of Oz tonight, I was hoping to see Shrek but it's not playing tonight. And then I will be on a plane home in the morning and asleep in my bed until further notice. Ok, it looks like I am seeing Shrek the musical now!
It's also at this point I realize how lucky I am to have a career that I love and amazing friends and family. As much as I have enjoyed two weeks away, I am anxious to see the incredible people I work with and my friends and family.
