A full day on the Mekong River Delta region, a lush wetlands area where it seems fishing and farming has remained unchanged for decades, if not centuries. So many people making their livelihoods from this very fertile area teeming with fish, water hyacinth, durian, melon, jackfruit, mango, pineapple, lychee. We take a mid-sized boat through the delta until we are suddenly stopped by water hyacinth that has drifted across the width of the river, choking off our route. Stuck! A quick cell phone call and about 3 minutes later we are picked up by a small rowboat captained by an older woman who brings the Delta-rice-fields-style sun hats for us. She takes us through some very shallow waterways until we dock and walk through the bush to our lunch. A village family hosts us for lunch - a feast of fresh, scales-still-on fish, prawn, chicken, and fresh rolls. We meet the woman whose place it is, as well as her son and husband. Very warm reception. On the return trip, C and I get into a good discussion re: women's roles in Vietnam, and the incredible relaxed-yet-industrious vibe of the people we've met so far.
