A couple of days after our last blog entry, we packed up the car and made our way out of Townsville towards Mission Beach. However we did not get very far!! An electrical problem with Alma meant that we had to get a tow back into town again to the RACQ garage, and book into a hostel for the weekend. Although this sucked at the time, we decided to make the most of a bad situation and go out on Saturday night to see how rocking Townsville is, turns out not very, but hey it was a good night. That weekend we also took a look around the Townsville Cultural Show, which was very cultural.
On Monday we called up the garage to check how Alma was, thankfully they had found the problem and she was fixed and ready to go on Tuesday. So once again we headed up to Mission Beach, this time we made it, and spent the day on the beach. The next day we went up to Cairns and sold Alma to a car dealer, we didn't get a lot for her but we needed a quick sale so we could enjoy our last few days in Australia. We stayed in a hostel called Shenanigans in Cairns right in the City Centre. It was a pretty cool hostel above an Irish themed pub, with live music every night and half price pub grub at the bar (Wahoo!). They also did a pub crawl tour and being new in town we thought this would be an ideal opportunity to sample the best of the Cairns nightlife. Five bars, six hours and an open-top double decker party bus to ferry us and another 118 drunkards round town, the hangover the next day told us it was a good night.
That weekend we also took a day trip out to The Great Barrier Reef on the Oceanfree Sailboat. We had a few hours snorkelling The Reef, which was excellent (and we made use of the underwater camera, a gift from Ali and Andy, so thanks guys!), we spent the afternoon sunbathing on nearby Green Island, before sailing back to Cairns, the trip back was very relaxing, the crew served us fruit, cheese and crackers and wine, whilst we laid back and enjoyed the sun on our faces. Perfect.
We are currently in Melbourne waiting for our flight out to New Zealand, after a few catch-up drinks last night with some friends we made in Sydney. We hate to leave Australia our time here has been amazing...I think the amount of times we have looked at each other and said "this is the life..." pretty much sums up the east coast of Oz, and we are already looking forward to exploring the rest of it another time! But it is on to NZ now to explore its stunning scenery, so lookout for our next entry when we will be telling you everything we did on the Southern Island.
Love and miss you all
