Huge Kauri log
Kauri is a hardwood podocarp pine. They grew, unmolested except by earthquakes and occasionally being made into a Maori canoe, until the arrival of white settlers in the 1800s. The huge trees were then felled extensively in New Zealand's pioneer period. This one was a sapling shortly after the Battle of Hastings in 1066.
