Neptunes Staircase is a series of 8 locks that allow boats to connect from 1 loch to another. The boats drop (or rise) 20 metres over a distance of 500 metres. The highway bridge and the railway bridge both swing away to allow the boats to pass. It takes about one & a half hours for a boat to go through.
