Ah, Athens. The first leg of our multi-continent 2012 adventure. Three times in this wonderful city and Athena always delivers. The extreme heat (38C degrees), jet lag as well as a cold and stomach bug between us slow things down a little. Still we enjoy the Plaka, Hadrian's monument (in cover photo) and stunning views of the Acropolis.
There is evidence of a country in crisis. Beggars on trains and kids on piano accordions all hoping for spare change to make their day. At lunch one such budding musician tried desperately to impress us and reap his rewards. The maitre-de tries to chase away our pint-sized entertainer who ducks and weaves between the tables and guests without missing a note. An interesting interchange as our host again later urges the boy to move away with a gentle kick on the backside followed by a paternal pat on the head. Whilst there is clear distain between the two, they understand each others situation and a deeper respect and empathy is evident.
Our hotel is close to the Acropolis so dinner at Strofi and Acropolis View Restaurant offer great sights of the stunning ruins that come alive from a sea of spotlights.
Mark and Linda join us on day 2 and we all recover and get into sightseeing holiday mode.
