We were debating how we would get to 1770 as a bus ticket to Hervey Bay via 1770 was going to cost $130 each, very pricey! We were considering hiring a car and putting a notice up offering a lift, but then we saw a notice offering one, score! After meeting the guy, an American guy called Conor, it was decided that we would get a lift with him and share fuel costs.
We left Airlie and started the 10hour drive to 1770 where we'd spend a night before continuing onto Hervey Bay. We made good time in the first part of the journey arriving in 1770 after 8 hours. We know Australia is a massive country but we literally saw nothing the whole way apart from when we passed through some towns! There were lots of signs saying that koalas we near by, but despite hours of looking out for them, we saw nothing.
We booked into Cool Bananas, a hostel that was recommended to us, and had a couple of drinks. The hostel was really nice and clean with a good layout, the only and major downfall was it didn't have air con. That wasn't a very good sleep =(
The next morning we went on a free tour of 1770 and Agnes Water. Captain Cook discovered 1770 in, wait for it, 1770! It is a small town with a population of 80 people and was the first place Captain Cook discovered. Agnes Water is a little bigger but still only has a population of 2 thousand and something, making them both very tranquil locations. The tour lasted about 30 minutes and afterwards we decided to move onto Hervey as there wasn't much to do apart from surfing and Scooteroos, both of which we were unable to do due to time. We had been told that the Scooteroos, which involve you riding a mini Harley Davidson bike, was in the morning so had planned on doing it, however once there found out it was actually the afternoons. So although we really wanted to do them we decided not to as it would mean Conor driving in the dark which we didn't think was fair.
The drive to Hervey only took 3 hours so we got here just in time to enjoy the afternoon sun. We split the cost of fuel so instead of paying $130 for the bus, we only paid $50 =)
