Sinterklaas is a celebration that they have on Dec. 5th in Holland. Santa Clause is becoming more popular but Sinterklaas is the traditional celebration. At the end of November Sinterklaas and his zwarte pieten (black helpers) arrive in every town by boat then they have a parade and at the end the mayor hands over the keys to the town hall to Sinterklaas and he officially runs the town till Dec. 5th. Dutch parents, like American parents, also use the gifts of Sinterklaas to bribe their kids into behavig well. One of my teachers, who has 3 kids, invited us to his house the day that Sinterklaas arrived and we went with his family to watch the arrival and celebration.
