We are now in Auckland, New Zealand after spending the last 8 days in Fiji.
We stayed on the mainland for 2 nights and also stayed on 4 different islands. This was a real experience as some of the islands were very basic family run resorts with no hot water and electricity from a generator which was turned off at midnight! We stayed in little huts on the beach which are called “Bures”
The first island we stayed at was a family run resort, they made us feel very welcome and we had a Kava ceremony with the locals. Kava is a local drink which looks and tastes like pond water! The ceremony lasted for a good few hours.
Believe it or not but on our first day on the islands it was pouring with rain! but after that the weather was superb. All of the islands were beautiful with coconut and mango trees and crystal clear blue seas with loads of tropical fish swimming around.
The best island we stayed was Bounty which is where celebrity Love Island was filmed! the Bures had air con and hot shower (everywhere else had cold showers!). The food was also really good – bacon for breakfast which made a change from stale cake and fruit which we got on the other islands.
We met lots of people in Fiji but all were nearly English apart from a couple of Aussies!!
From what we have seen so far of Auckland it is a cool place, the hostel we are staying in is really nice (Verandas – thanks Fi for the recommendation!) and is near loads of bars and restaurants. It’s really cold here at the moment so it is a bit of a shock to the system!!
