Hey all,
Just a quick update, am now in Christchurch and leave for Australia in 2 days. I can't believe I've been gone almost 2 1/2 months and in NZ for 2 of them, although I have been pretty busy and am very much settled into it now, so in other ways its not so hard to believe I suppose. Anyways NZ in an awesome place and I could easily complain about leaving it as it has everything for me mainly a laid back attitude, outdoors and action, however since I am off to OZ I can't really labour the point as I doubt I'll be getting much sympathy.
Here's what I've been up to since I last posted:
23rd March I did what's called the canyon swing. This is fairly self explanatory, a massive swing inside a canyon, you first freefall for 60m (most bungy's are only around 40m), falling down next to the rocks and then swing out in a 200m arc through the canyon. First things first, I'd say check out the videos before looking at the pics if you have time to watch them, I think its probably better that way. It's hard to compare to the bungy, its kinda similar in the freefall, but because its not anywhere near as big as the 134m freefall in the nevis the rush from this part isn't quite as big! But it's really the view you get as you fall close to the rocks, the crazy different ways you can do it and the banter with the staff (whom try their utmost to sketch you out) that makes it really great fun! I wore my t-shirt from the nevis so knew I'd get a bit of teasing for it. I did 2 jumps (you can get a 2nd for just $50/20 GBP). The 1st I went off backwards whilst sitting in a garden chair, which was probably the scariest of the 2, especially as they kept pulling me back as I was just about to go. When I actually fell they had pretended to pull me back so I was actually not expecting to fall at all, hence the look on my face! The 2nd I asked the 'jumpmaster' what was a cool way to do it whilst getting excellent views, so they suggested a handstand, which was also scary and exciting at the same time (you should be able to see what I mean). Anyways this was great fun, I'm really loving this type of bungy/swing extreme sport as it gives you such an adrenelin rush.
I also bumped back into Rich, so it is currently me Ben and Rich, which is the same guys I was travelling with for a week to 2 right up at the beginning in the north island which is really nice to do stuff with them again as they're both a great laugh. From the 24th - 27th we went to Mt Cook togethor to do some walking togethor. This is a quiet little town (even by NZ standards, the school has 17 children!) in a gorgeous setting. We went on a couple of day walks including a long day inc 8 hrs walking, pretty much 4 steep uphill, 1 flat and 3 down but this one was really rewarding in views, with a mountain covered with a massive glacier which can be seen on the left in the pic but stretches round a long way and Mt Cook (the highest in NZ at 12000 odd feet) in the background. These are pretty much my last great sights in NZ but are a great way to top it off as they really were great and I've seen my fair share in the last 2 months.
Anyway, off to OZ, so I'll let you all know how that goes.
