So, amigos, I hope you are all relieved to see that I am safe and sound in Ecuador. Getting here was an adventure in itself, but I made it. My first day here I wandered around a little bit, ate at some random places, and slept a lot. The change in altitude had me feeling a little funny, so nothing too exciting.
Yesterday I got a lot done. Since I am only in the city for a couple of days, I had a lot of things to take care of. I went to check in with the Ecuador Volunteer Foundation to get information and stuff. On the way back to my hostel, I passed by a travel agency. I though I may as well stop in and check on prices, since ideally I wanted to have my trip to the Amazon ready to go when I am done with my project. Well, it turned out to be a pretty sweet deal so I went ahead and booked it, and now I am all set for a four day hiking and canoeing adventure on May 5!!
By then it was past one, and I really wanted to go see La Mitad del Mundo (the middle of the world, or the equator line.) On the bus ride I saw sooo many pooches, all over, especially on rooftops. I wanted to eat them aaaall, just munch on their adorable faces. For those of you who are concerned about me catching something from a dog bite or disease ridden fleas, don´t be worried-I have been vaccinated against every existing South American disease, and I still have the swollen arm to prove it.
So at La Mitad del Mundo, some silly French scientists decided to build a park with a huge monument at Latitude Zero, only to be proven wrong by modern science, satellites, and Inca ruins lined up neatly right on the real equator. Crazy!! So I went to see the monument, but I am told that from a mountain in Otavalo you can see the ruins all lined up right on the equator, so that is my new goal. The park and the monument were cool, though, even if it is more a tribute to the stubborness of scientists than it is to the equator.
Anyway friends, I need to get going. I am heading off to my project today, so I´ll try to update you on the days that I go into town. I´m working on uploading pictures, but it´s kind of a pain. Miss you all!
