Us again! just realised we have done 6 blogs in 2 weeks....hope we arn't boring you already but if we dont write up straight away i know we will forget.
So we are in Luang Namtha, after a 3 and a half hour drive in a tin can of a mini bus, roughing it with the locals, i thought we are going to have to sit on the roof at one point, they sure do like to cram people in. So the road is up, down, around and up, down over and over again, but going at 10pmh up a hill was good for the travel sickness so i didnt mind going slow, plus we past at least 3 up turned lorries on the way up. We have the whole thing to do again tomorrow....cant wait for that!
The town itself is bigger and really pretty, guest house is nice, still havnt had a warm shower though! There are lots of tour operators selling treks which is what we had the intention of doing whilst we were up here as we are right on the edge of Laos biggest national park and densest jungle, however, the prices are based on how many people sign up to a particular treck on the day, so if there is only two people who have thier name down its really expensive and then the more people the cheaper it is, we left it until the last minute but there was only our names down for the one day track we wanted to do so we decided to spend our two days on some bikes instead.
We hired two bikes out for about £2 for the whole day so we had great fun cycling around. we found a waterfall and a couple of stupas, which are like temples on the top of a hill so some great views. We have seen loads of villages and i was dying to take loads of pictures as they are just amazing, all wooden and on sticks with thier whole families in one wooden house, but its a big no no to take pictures of Laos people unless you ask them first, they believe if you take a photo of them then a part of thier soul is trapped on camera...and i didnt fancy having any souls on my camera!
The weather is a lot better, the rain stopped a couple of days ago, it seems to stay cloudy until about 11 and then it clears for the rest of the day and is beautiful. It is bloody freezing though! my god at night and in the morning it is super super cold, we are sleeping in our long tops and fleeces, luckily this room has two duvets but the place before just had a sheet and a throw! In the day it feels very much like a british summer day, warm sun but still a slight chill in the air, that being said i managed to burn my face leaving rather sexy sunglasses lines!
We are heading back to Huay Xai tomorrow morning on the same slow tin bus, Huay Xai is where you can pick up the famous two day slow boat down the Mekong river to Luang Prabang which is a lot further south so finges crossed it will be a little warmer. We have booked 5 nights in a lovely guest house in Luang Prabang so that is where we will spend our christmas. We found it really tricky to find a half decent place for all those days and its costing a lot more but i guess its christmas so they all bump up the prices. Luang Prabang is Laos second city and is supposed to be a great place with lots to do so we are really looking forward to going and being there for christmas.
