What a great day we have had and a wonderful start to our adventure (apart from the 5am wake up call!!)
Car finally packed (with us in it), final goodbyes said and underway at 6.30am. Not bad :-)
First point of call was Bakers Hill bakery for breakfast. We would love to tell you it was terribly healthy but in fact it was pie, sausage roll and Red Bull. Mmmmm.
Well fed and back on the road in high spirits we looked forward with patient anticipation to what the day would bring us. It did not disappoint.
Cunderdin must fancy itself as a bit of a QLD copycat as it has built itself a replica of the Ettamogah Hotel, which is famous in QLD for having a car on the roof, being slightly lopsided and featured in its very own cartoon strip. Hmm not sure if the Cunderdin version is quite so famous???? However, when you turn your head, there is a whopping great big chimney reaching for the sky. I asked the knower of all (Damien) what it was for but he is unsure- so can't help you- sorry... It is umm rather umm large though and well less said the better :-)
To ensure that the trip was not only fun, but also educational for me, Damien next stopped at the Rabbit proof fence, which he informs me stretched from the top of WA to the bottom (I have uploaded a photo of the info at the bay coz he sometimes tells me stuff that is cr@p to have a laugh at me). I guess we had the same problem as China -too many rabbits in China (remember the Bigpond ad??) It does work though, Damien did a reenactment to show me just how it works (see photo)
The next stop was totally unplanned but a memorable experience.
We pulled into a stop bay at Boorabin to stretch our legs and discovered we were at the memorial site for the 3 truck drivers who lost their lives when the great Boorabin bush fire overcame them in 2007. Such a tragedy. It is a beautiful memorial site though and worth a quick stop to pay your respects if you are passing by.
Back on the road again and with stomachs starting to rumble, we got serious about getting to Kalgoorlie for a much needed pint/chardy and a good ol counter meal. Just around 170 or so km's to go!!
Driving..... Driving....... Driving...... Driving......
We are finally in Kalgoorlie - however you could mistake for gay Maris gras with all the costumes and color. It happened that the Variety Club Bash were in town, and after chatting to one of the guys up at the bar for a good 10 - 15 minutes whilst waiting for a girl who must have been cold considering she had no clothes on to serve us, we have decided that we want to add this to our Bucket list. Turns out we think we would be very good at it, because all you do is drink, dress up, raise money and have an absolute ball!! All jokes aside, it was kind of cool to donate to an actual person (in our case an extremely colorful and slightly inebriated clown) participating in the bash :-)
Paddy's for lunch and oh my god lots of it. $12 bangers and mash could have fed both of us!! That glass (or 2) of chardy was pure liquid gold!!
Ok, stomachs satiated and libations depleted we HAD to stop at the Superpit (Damien had to see a hole NOT filled with cement). And what a hole it was. It is amazing what some explosives and some earthmoving equipment can do!! Cool stuff.
Time to get serious again though and head to our final stop for today - Norseman (a mere 180km) away - and set up camp.
We are now sitting in our tent in Norseman (Yeeha) glad we got set up before the really black clouds rained on us. So ends a very tiring day one of our adventure.. 830km down 4000 and something to go!! Tomorrow we head to Eucla - the WA border.
Lights out - goodnight.
