A week that included theme parks, the zoo, mountains, islands, valentines day and lots of rain is over.
It all started on a bright sunny Monday morning when we left our lovely little town (Brunswick Heads) and headed towards Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast. Now in my opinion the name of this place is false advertising and should be changed because it isn't paradise at all. Instead as you drive up you are greeted by a sight of lots of high rise buildings and traffic (and if there is anyone out there who disagrees please tell me because everyone who I have spoken to feels the same)!!!
So we headed straight back in the direction that we came from to the town just before Surfers Paradise called Burleigh Heads. This is a lovely little town which is right on the beach and as soon as we parked up our caravan and hooked up the power - which we are now experts at - headed for the beach across the road. The beach itself isn't the best but it is worth spending an afternoon on. To be honest we were far too excited to enjoy anywhere as we were planning to go to the 2 big theme parks on the next 2 days - Warner Brothers World and Dreamworld.
When Tuesday morning arrived we were so excited that we arrived at Warner World before the park opened. I wont go into too much detail for the next 2 days as most of our time was spent being upside down or going round bends at 200mph. However, the highlight for me was a ride called "The Giant Drop". Basically this is a vertical stand (equivalent to a 38 floor building) in which you sit and are gently taken up to the top where you sit and admire the view for a few minutes, then true to its name...well you can imagine the rest. The freefall is only a few seconds but it is unbelievable. I figured this was good practice for when I do a tandem sky dive!
On Thursday after recovering our sense of balance from the previous 2 days we headed to Brisbane. In short Brisbane is like any other city and is very nice to spend a couple of days in and we spent one morning going to the Southbank (which looks remarkably like the Southbank in London in architecture) to see the History of video games exhibition (yeah thanks Sally). So we spent the morning playing old arcades like Space Invaders!!!
And so we come to Friday, when the rain came. It rained, then it rained some more and then it rained more. We just about managed to stay sane through spending a day in the caravan playing cards when Saturday arrived and so did the rain - again!!! We couldn't spend another day in a caravan so we headed out and bought a portable DVD player and enjoyed watching DVDs. This actually ended being very fitting for Valentines Day.
By Sunday we were beginning to think that the notices around the camp about Brisbane being in drought were taking the piss - when the sunshine arrived and once again buoyant by this we headed to Australia Zoo just by the Glass Mountains. The Zoo itself was a lot of fun and Sally held a Koala and we got to see some huge crocodiles before retiring to a local caravan park.
We drove up to Rainbow Beach which is very near to Fraser Island yesterday and have spent today at Fraser Island - with wait for it...more rain!!!
I'm going to update you on the Glass Mountains and Fraser Island in another blog because the woman who owns the shop we are using the internet at is closing, so bye for now.
